President Trump enjoys 60 percent approval for his handling of the coronaviruspandemic, but that has not stopped his critics from trying to stoke public outrage at his expense.
After the president expressed hope that the anti-malaria drug chloroquine was showing signs of success as a treatment for the coronavirus, news organizations tried to blame him for the death of an Arizona man who self-medicated with fish tank solvent that contained a different form of the substance. “Man dies after taking drug touted as coronavirus treatment by Trump,” CBS News declared. No, he didn’t. Trump never suggested anyone self-medicate with aquarium cleaner.
Now the latest source of outrage is the president’s announcement that wants to begin lifting the current economic lockdown by Easter. In a press briefingTuesday, Trump said his “goal is to ease the guidelines and open things up to very large sections of our country” and that “I hope we can do this by Easter,” but added that “our decision will be based on hard facts and data.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Every life matters. That is why at the start of a pandemic, the right strategy is to accept high economic risk in order to mitigate the risks to public health of a new and unknown pathogen. Trump effectively ordered a recession — asking businesses to close and workers to stay home — to slow the spread of the virus so that public health officials could learn how it behaves, develop our testing capability and increase the production of protective gear, ventilators and hospital capacity for the hardest-hit areas, as well as the development of therapeutics to treat it.

But over time, as we get a handle on the outbreak, we need to start adjusting our decision-making to balance risk with the massive toll the lockdown is taking on the American people. While journalists can telework, millions of Americans who can’t are losing their careers and the businesses they spent a lifetime building. A prolonged economic shutdown will lead to deaths as well, in the form of increased rates of depression, substance abuse and suicide.
The president understands that we need a sustainable strategy to defeat the virus and that the current lockdown is unsustainable. A record 3.28 millionAmericans applied for unemployment benefits last week, and economists warn that gross domestic product could decline by about 30 percent in the second quarter as a result of the lockdown. That can’t continue indefinitely.
The emergency relief bill buys us some more time, but at enormous cost. We are borrowing $2 trillion from our children and grandchildren so the government can effectively replace the lost revenue and paychecks of millions of businesses and workers in the United States. We can’t do that forever. And replacing lost income does not replace the dignity of work.
Company mass-producing coronavirus test kits had them rigged to yield false positives.
No one in the White House is suggesting that we sacrifice the elderly or the vulnerable. Asked by a reporter “how many deaths are you willing to accept?” to restore growth, Trump answered “none.” Rather, the goal is to get this country to the same place as South Korea, which has effectively contained the virus without quarantining tens of millions of people. South Koreans did so by following a strategy of “Trace, Test and Treat” — using mass testing to isolate the infected while allowing healthy people to go about their lives. South Korea has been able to do this because it was able to test early. We have not because we lost six crucial weeks in ramping up testing thanks to the incompetence of the Food and Drug Administration, which refused to allow private and academic advanced labs to develop coronavirus tests. Only in March were FDA restrictions lifted and outside labs given the green light to begin testing.
It will take time to catch up, but once we reach that point where we can test anyone, we can start figuring out where we can ease up on the lockdowns. As Anthony S. Fauci said on Tuesday, “areas of the country that are not hot spots … still have a window of significant degree of being able to contain” the virus. It may be that in these parts of the country where there aren’t many cases, we can begin to follow the South Korean approach soon, while the hardest-hit places such as New York may need to maintain a lockdown for many months.
Will that happen by Easter? Maybe, maybe not. As Fauci says, we need to be flexible and follow the evidence. But it has to happen eventually.

My apologies if this post is a bit mundane, but it’s an example of the madness that is going on. As it turns out, retirees who have not filed a tax return, can collect a one time payment of $1200 IF they file a return for 2019. I could not complete the 1040 (I found a copy on line) until I had a statement of earnings from the SSA. SO, I was just going to take a quick trip to my local office and get the copy of my 1099. The office….which is fairly large considering the rather small population of the surrounding counties…is totally closed due to the ‘virus’. The folks who work there are apparently working from home. I called and the woman who addressed my needs was actually in her home. Apparently they re-routed the normal 877 number to her home.
I think the take-away here is that this did not happen spontaneously or overnight. It was planned well in advance.
As far as I know, this is not an April Fool joke, but I do not have that damnable Alexa (and would not have one if hell froze over), so I cannot check the response….possibly someone here can:
End the shutdown! The government and anyone else has no right and NO TRUE PREMISE to tell their citizens they cannot work and socialize. It’s outrageous and unconstitutional. After a few months it is followed by an LLC tax return, which until about a year ago was due on April 15 like the personal but was moved up to March 15 only to confuse the tax prepares and citizens even more. Here’s a bizarre twist to the pandemic and the dollar amounts of the supposed relief package. Do you remember the $600 for the really poor people and the $1200 to the rest making under 100k a year? More insanity from the front lines of Colorado’s planned-demic. I walked into the gun store today which is two doors down from my pal’s liquor store. The Proprietor backed up like he was about to be robbed. Wish I had video of it. I asked where were all the guns? There was none in cases and none on the walls. He gave me a non-answer to a really simple question. He asked if I could back up. I’m like “really?… you’re falling for this shit too?” I asked him how long the wait was for a gun purchase approval? He looked at his computer and said 7 days and change.Then he said he had no idea where I had just been. I told him I could just leave right now and never come back. I meant it too. So what if you can order online or at the drive thru; if you are out of work, you have no disposable income for Taco Bell or shoes from Amazon. Even those who are still being paid by employers will cut back on spending due to fears their checks may be reduced if this martial law farce continues. I noticed the comment sections on stories about Coronavirus and most of the commenters are voicing skepticism. That is a good thing; more people are seeing through the con but still too many are remaining good sheeple.

SO, I was at Home Depot today….”X” marks all over the store where you have to stand to avoid contact with others….same at Dollar General. Lowes has set up Plexiglass barriers in the garden center at the check out. All the restaurants in Lake City were only open for take out and drive through…except for the Waffle House…totally open. Starbucks was totally closed.

In case there is any doubt, those “pandemic influenza seasons” of 1957 and 1968 did NOT result in any lockdowns. People went outdoors. They mingled. They sat in stadiums. They went to their jobs.

Here’s a bizarre twist to the pandemic and the dollar amounts of the supposed relief package. Do you remember the $600 for the really poor people and the $1200 to the rest making under 100k a year? I just did a search on google for “AR-15 prices”. The very first two that came up were priced at $599.99 and $1,199.99 … what are the chances ? When you search AR-15 prices it takes you directly to Classic Firearms website and those are the first two.

Personally, I lead an isolated life….maybe going to town twice a week at the most, so I certainly do not feel any real change in my life style. I would normally go to Panera’s in Lake City, Fl once a week, but since they have closed that seems to be the only way I have been ‘inconvenienced’. Unfortunately, I am surrounded by a few folks who refuse to leave their house OR even allow me to visit.
