Marc Thiessen, The media’s mischaracterization of Trump’s Mount Rushmore speech is not an anomaly

Marc A. Thiessen

“We believe in equal opportunity, equal justice and equal treatment for citizens of every race, background, religion and creed.” —President Trump, July 3, 2020, Mount Rushmore.

I missed President Trump’s Mount Rushmore speech Friday night, so when I read the press coverage over the weekend I braced for the worst. The New York Times reported that Trump had delivered an “ominous depiction of the recent protests over racial justice” and “exploit[ed] race and cultural flash points to stoke fear among his base of white supporters.” The Associated Press declared that he had “accus[ed] protesters who have pushed for racial justice of engaging in a ‘merciless campaign to wipe out our history.’”

Then I watched the full address. None of it was true. “We embrace tolerance, not prejudice,” Trump said. “Every child, of every color — born and unborn — is made in the holy image of God.” He praised great black Americans including Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Jesse Owens, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Muhammad Ali, declaring that “only America could have produced them all.”

Standing beneath the image of Abraham Lincoln, Trump declared, “Lincoln won the Civil War; he issued the Emancipation Proclamation; he led the passage of the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery for all time.” The crowd cheered at his mention of the abolition of slavery, which got zero mentions in the coverage of his address. Trump explained that “by tearing down Washington and Jefferson, these radicals … would tear down the principles that propelled the abolition of slavery in America and, ultimately, around the world, ending an evil institution that had plagued humanity for thousands and thousands of years.” He declared, “Our opponents would tear apart the very documents that Martin Luther King used to express his dream, and the ideas that were the foundation of the righteous movement for Civil Rights.” To the Times, this amounts to “stoking racial fears to pit a white voting base against nationwide calls for social justice.”

The mischaracterization of the Mount Rushmore speech is not an anomaly. Trump’s critics in the media have fallen into an insidious habit of taking his quotes criticizing the hordes who burn buildings and tear down statues, and reporting them as criticism of “racial justice protesters.” This is dishonest. Trump has said more than once that he is “an ally of all peaceful protesters.” He’s not the one blurring the lines between violent mobs and peaceful protesters; his media critics are. They know most Americans oppose the mob but support racial justice, and so they twist Trump’s words to make it seem like he opposes both. Trump says and tweets plenty of outrageous things, but that doesn’t give reporters license to make them up.

Trump believes that if you give an inch to the “cancel culture,” it’s a slippery slope. Nearly three years ago, he warned that if we take down statues of Robert E. Lee, soon they’ll come after George Washington. Well, as Megan McArdle pointed out in The Post, he was prescient. I happen to think we should have a national conversation about Confederate monuments, and that Trump would be in a stronger position to defend the American founding if he led one. But you can’t have a national conversation with a mob. And the rioters tearing down and defacing statues and memorials of Washington, Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant have proven they are not just opposed to the Confederacy — they’re opposed to the Union.

What about the charge that he declared a culture war? That is like saying that America declared war on Japan; it’s technically correct but misses the point. The left launched the culture war and the cancel culture that, as Trump said, is “driving people from their jobs, shaming dissenters and demanding total submission from anyone who disagrees.” The president is simply fighting back against this war of political intolerance — and it’s about time someone did.

The iconoclasm we see today is rooted in a broader movement that seeks to cancel and discredit the American founding. (One Times reporter’s Twitter header photo literally shows the words “July 4, 1776” with a line drawn through, replaced by “August 20, 1619,” the date the first enslaved Africans arrived at Jamestown.) At Mount Rushmore, Trump declared that no one will cancel the American founding on his watch. That is only controversial in bluest reaches of blue America. If celebrating and defending our founding principles on the Fourth of July is “dark and divisive” that tells us less about Trump than the sad state of our country.

  1. From 153news.net: (quick one showing Portland BLM and Antifa creatures attacking soldiers)

Best comment yet re this behavior….(hard to disagree…I also corrected some spelling…..although I do disagree with suspending legitimate protests. RIOTS are not a form of legitimate protest!)

Indeed, this puzzle has many pieces. I STATE AGAIN, this is so easily cleaned up, if they wanted. They have purposefully and allowed IT TO GET THIS FAR, for their own experiment. Its good not more have died but, with one swift action this nonsense could STOP. THE MOST POWERFUL NATION IN THE WORLD, can’t NOW HANDLE ITS OWN PEOPLE. BOOSHIT. Its all by Design, in a sloppy loose way. My PIPE DREAM. Trump says in front of the world. We are suspending the CONSTITUTION FOR THE SAFETY OF ITS PEOPLE, WE ARE SUSPENDING ANY AND ALL PROTESTS TILL FURTHER NOTICE AND THINGS RETURNING TO NORMALCY, IF YOU ARE CAUGHT ENGAGING IN ANY PROTESTS, RIOTS ETC, 2 YEARS PRISON NO EXCEPTIONS. of course NEVER HAPPEN.

And here is an excellent interview in which Tucker destroys this “professor” in regard to the need for violence…and this moron is teaching our children? Sad as it gets!

  2. President Trump….It is a thousand truths beyond the time for you to make a move. We the People
trusted your campaign promises, the most important of which was to give this government back to us. We understand the odds were against you, but you have persisted and overcome many attempts to remove you from office. IT IS NOW TIME TO FIGHT FOR THOSE WHO ENTRUSTED YOU WITH OUR WELL BEING AND THE HEALTH AND WEALTH OF THIS GREAT NATION. DO WHAT IS RIGHT. DO WHAT YOU PROMISED. DO WHAT IS NECESSARY. ALL…….I SAY ALL YOU NEED IS RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF YOU!

    Jon Rappoport:

Dispatches from the War: Mr. Trump, deliver a knockout blow to the traitorous CDC
(To read about Jon’s mega-collection, The Matrix Revealed, click here.)
“…against all enemies, foreign and domestic…”

    Let’s get domestic.

I promise you, Mr. President, if you send a hundred FBI agents into the CDC and remove millions of their files as evidence, you’ll discover this federal agency is entirely corrupt, and has been for decades.

While the Department of Justice prepares indictments, make a public declaration that your administration will ignore all their COVID case numbers and recommendations. They’re criminal liars. That’s their whole game.

Let me help you out with four examples. Face it, you’re not good with details, so you may want a team to summarize the following revelations for you.

ONE: The Atlantic, May 21, 2020, has a story, headlined, “How could the CDC make that mistake?”

I’ll give you the key quotes, and then comment on the stark inference The Atlantic somehow failed to grasp.

“We’ve learned that the CDC is making, at best, a debilitating mistake: combining test results that diagnose current coronavirus infections with test results that measure whether someone has ever had the virus…The agency confirmed to The Atlantic on Wednesday that it is mixing the results of viral [PCR] and antibody tests, even though the two tests reveal different information and are used for different reasons.”

“Several states—including Pennsylvania, the site of one of the country’s largest outbreaks, as well as Texas, Georgia, and Vermont—are blending the data in the same way. Virginia likewise mixed viral and antibody test results until last week, but it reversed course and the governor apologized for the practice after it was covered by the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Atlantic. Maine similarly separated its data on Wednesday; Vermont authorities claimed they didn’t even know they were doing this.”

“‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’ Ashish Jha, the K. T. Li Professor of Global Health at Harvard and the director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told us when we described what the CDC was doing. ‘How could the CDC make that mistake? This is a mess’.”

“The CDC stopped publishing anything resembling a complete database of daily [COVID] test results on February 29. When it resumed publishing test data last week [the middle of May]…”

First of all, notice the CDC stopped reporting complete case numbers on a daily basis, for two and a half months. Remember that. I’ll cover a more egregious CDC stoppage in a minute.

But here is the main event: The Atlantic fails to mention the true outcome of this “test-combining mistake” at the CDC—which, in fact, is a purposeful maneuver.

Only the PCR should be used for case-counting (according to the conventional experts).

You take those two types of tests, the antibody and the PCR…put them together, add up those results which suggest COVID in any relevant or irrelevant way, and voila, you have inflated case numbers. Which is exactly what the CDC wants. They’re in the business of raising false alarms and promoting epidemics. That’s called a crime.

TWO: In August of 2014, a long-time researcher at the CDC, William Thompson, publicly admitted that he and his co-authors intentionally lied in their study of the MMR vaccine.

They concluded the vaccine did not raise the risk of autism. But they knew this was a fabrication. Their data (which they threw out in the trash) pointed to an increased risk of autism in very young African American children.

Thompson refused to speak with the press, after he published his confession on his attorney Rick Morgan’s website. Thompson said he would testify at a Congressional hearing. Despite efforts, a hearing never materialized. Thompson remained silent, and the CDC reassigned him to another unit.

No one at the CDC has been prosecuted for this crime.

THREE: In the fall of 2009, during the so-called Swine Flu epidemic, CBS investigative reporter, Sharyl Attkisson, discovered the CDC had secretly stopped counting cases in the US.

Yet, the agency was claiming tens of thousands of Americans had the epidemic disease.

She found out why the CDC had gone dark. Here is an excerpt from an interview I did with Attkisson:

Rappoport: “In 2009, you spearheaded coverage of the so-called Swine Flu pandemic. You discovered that, in the summer of 2009, the Centers for Disease Control, ignoring their federal mandate, [secretly] stopped counting Swine Flu cases in America. Yet they continued to stir up fear about the ‘pandemic,’ without having any real measure of its impact. Wasn’t that another investigation of yours that was shut down? Wasn’t there more to find out?”

Attkisson: “The implications of the story were even worse than that. We discovered through our FOI efforts that before the CDC mysteriously stopped counting Swine Flu cases, they had learned that almost none of the cases they had counted as Swine Flu was, in fact, Swine Flu or any sort of flu at all! The interest in the story from one [CBS] executive was very enthusiastic. He said it was ‘the most original story’ he’d seen on the whole Swine Flu epidemic. But others pushed to stop it [after it was published on the CBS News website] and, in the end, no [CBS television news] broadcast wanted to touch it. We aired numerous stories pumping up the idea of an epidemic, but not the one that would shed original, new light on all the hype. It was fair, accurate, legally approved and a heck of a story. With the CDC keeping the true Swine Flu stats secret, it meant that many in the public took and gave their children an experimental vaccine that may not have been necessary.”

Total CDC fakery. Turning a Nothing into a “pandemic” and selling it. Needless to say, that is a crime.

But it isn’t end of the story.

The CDC wanted to commit another crime. About three weeks after Attkisson’s findings were published on the CBS News website, the CDC, obviously in a panic, decided to double down. If one lie is exposed, tell an even bigger one. A much bigger one.

Here, from a November 12, 2009, WebMD article is the CDC’s response: “Shockingly, 14 million to 34 million U.S. residents – the CDC’s best guess is 22 million – came down with H1N1 swine flu by Oct. 17 [2009].” (“22 million cases of Swine Flu in US,” by Daniel J. DeNoon).

Are your eyeballs popping, Mr. Trump? They should be.

What about the Swine Flu vaccine people took in 2009, to prevent the non-existent disease? Robert Kennedy, Jr. has made some pointed remarks on the subject. You remember Robert, don’t you, Mr. President? Early on in your term, you met with him and discussed the subject of dangerous vaccinations. Notice, in this quote, Kennedy mentions your chief COVID liar, Tony Fauci:

“For example, [Dr. Anthony] Fauci once shilled for the fast-tracked H1N1 influenza (‘swine flu’) vaccine on YouTube, reassuring viewers in 2009 that serious adverse events were ‘very, very, very rare.’ Shortly thereafter, the vaccine went on to wreak havoc in multiple countries, increasing miscarriage risks in pregnant women in the U.S., provoking a spike in adolescent narcolepsy in Scandinavia and causing febrile convulsions in one in every 110 vaccinated children in Australia—prompting the latter to suspend its influenza vaccination program in under-fives.”

FOUR: In 2003, there was a declared SARS global epidemic. I mention it to give you a flavor of CDC reportage.

On a current CDC website page, we find this: “Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus, called SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). SARS was first reported in Asia in February 2003. Over the next few months, the illness spread to more than two dozen countries in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia before the SARS global outbreak of 2003 was contained.”

From reading that paragraph, you would think this was quite a dangerous and serious event. But scrolling down further on the very same CDC page, we come to this: “According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 8,098 people worldwide became sick with SARS during the 2003 outbreak. Of these, 774 died. In the United States, only eight people had laboratory evidence of SARS-CoV infection.”

Clever devils, these CDC people, aren’t they?

I assure you, Mr. Trump, the four examples I’ve cited are only a particle of a sliver of a tip of the scandal. The CDC has been operating as a criminal agency inside the United States for a very long time.

Sending in the FBI to seize records, indicting and prosecuting hundreds, at the very least, of their employees and top executives, and cutting the agency off from any input whatsoever concerning COVID, would mark a tremendous service to the nation.

The economic war against the American people is backed up and justified by massively fraudulent data and fake science. A MAJOR source of that data-cascade emanates like putrid swamp water from the CDC.

    Take them out, Mr. President.

  3. Trump hit a walk off grand slam as far as speeches go. However… the Communist Cultural Revolution needs to be defeated with action. Who ever thought there would be a better gun salesman than Barry? The Kung Flu shutdown backed up gun sale approval to 7 days in Colorado. The riots must have had a similar effect in Minnesota and other commie revolt hot spots. The Health Ranger did an interview with a former Homeland Insecurity official. They were discussing a looming financial melt down where the banks just shut their doors before there can even be a run on the branches. I’m mystified how inflation didn’t explode already with trillions in funny money printed like there’s not tomorrow.

I had a checking account at Jackson State Bank for many years. With direct deposit and an ATM card, I saw no pressing reason to close it when I left Jackson Hole. During the sub-prime fiasco, I called up for a balance and their phone was disconnected. In horror, I called the main number and that was disconnected too. I was panicked because i thought that did not happen anymore… not since the Great Depression. What was worse was nearly every dime I owned had just vanished like a David Copperfield gag.

It took a month to forensically recover my money after Wells Fargo luckily took over Jackson State. It’s the only reason I bank there, that and the no fee ATMs all over. I almost closed my Wells Fargo account a few years ago when they told me they removed all their coin counting machines with a smile and referred me to Safeway machines where I could now pay 11% for a formerly free service. They smiled like they were doing me a favor. I wasn’t pissed off – I was ready to become a human volcano. I just wanted to punch that shit eating grin right off his smarmy face.

The war on cash continues without let up. They are trying to demonize cash with the Kung Flu. I don’t consider myself any kind of financial expert, however… I am going to withdrawal all money except for enough to pay bills. After my surreal experience at Jackson State Bank, Wells Fargo could shut down on any given day. The kids are already programed to not carry cash. I had a group of 17 people who could only come up with $5 between them for a tip. They started talking about ven-mo and asked why i didn’t have it. Because it’s not cash you pathetic brain dead millennials.
