William de Berg, THE FATAL CONTRADICTIONS OF IDENTITY POLITICS

William de Berg

For much of modern history, tribal and other identities have been subjugated to larger, national allegiances, as in the formation of the major nations of Europe such as Germany and Italy and the creation of new states elsewhere in the world by colonial powers.   But in the past few decades, particularly in the Europe and the United States, a reverse trend has occurred—namely, the encouragement of separate ethnic, racial, religious, and gender identities within nation states.   There are two main reasons for this:  1) a deliberate attempt to undermine national allegiances and sovereignty; and 2) the use of separate identities tied to perceived “victimhood” as a means of achieving political power.   The appeal to separate identifies has been pervasive in many nations and has spawned a large industry devoted to bringing about “diversity, equity and inclusion” (DEI).  But the momentum on the identity and anti-nationalism fronts is now reversing as the inherent contradictions and dangers of identity politics have become manifest.

The attack on national sovereignty, long advocated by globalist bankers and leaders in the West [1], has been carried out from both top-down and bottom-up directions.   The former has involved the creation of supranational organizations such as the United Nations, European Union, World Health Organization, International Court of Justice, international lending institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, and many other global institutions that have placed dampers on the prerogatives and actions of individual nations.  The latter approach has involved a relentless strategy to weaken national allegiances by supplanting them with ethnic and other identities and the opening of borders to cheap labor around the world.   The unprecedented mass migration to industrialized western nations from the rest of the world during the 21st Century and latter half of the 20th—promoted and financially fueled by governments and financiers [2]—is dramatically changing the face of Europe and the United States.   Many European nations will soon witness their native European populations in the minority [3]; in the United States, the influx of illegal immigrants alone during the four years of the Biden Administration (>10 million) almost equaled the entire amount of legal immigration (~12 million) from Europe and the Caribbean passing through Ellis Island in New York during its 62-year stint as the main immigration center in the United States [4].   A decreasing ability to assimilate to the norms and values of the host nations is causing major cultural frictions, disillusionment among the native populations [5], and a loss of societal cohesiveness.

The aggrandizement of ethnic and other identities for political purposes is the other major source of the recent fragmentation of national identity.  While democratic and other political systems have long appealed to citizens on the basis of special interests and grievances, the new identity politics represents an appeal to a large variety of groups with special designation—race and ethnicity (e.g., African-American, Asian, Mexican-American), illegal immigrants, religion (e.g., Jews, Muslims), and gender (e.g., females in general, gays, transgenders).   These groups differ substantially in their histories, traditions, interests, and values, but the common denominator in all these appeals is the concept of “victimization”—by racism, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, Islamophobia, and the like.    The “perpetrators” are invariably white Europeans and Americans and more specifically white cis-males of a conservative bent.  Until the latter half of the 20th Century the victimization was real, but after decades of full legal protections, affirmative action, and minority and gender outreach, the victimization is now mostly a self-perception by the designated group.   For example, whereas women were once a rarity in many high-paying jobs and academic institutions, younger females now outperform males at almost every grade level, most subjects, in college graduation rates, entry into prestigious professional fields like law and medicine, and even in earnings [6].   The bete noir in the eyes of identity politics is Donald Trump, who has been relentlessly savaged in the media and by his opponents as a misogynistic racist.  In fact, he was the first American presidential candidate to be called a racist by his opponent, Hillary Clinton in 2016, along with his “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, [and] Islamophobic“ “deplorable” supporters [7].  The fact that Trump appointed a high percentage of women and “persons of color” to his recent cabinet has done little to deflect the attacks on him by the identity-craven Democratic Party and its henchmen in the media.

The grand flaw in identity politics is the blurring of the line between “victim” and “perpetrator”.  It is one thing to list dozens of victimized groups and blame cis-white conservative males for the victimization, but it is much more difficult to reconcile when the perpetrators—whether they be Muslim males, young African-American males, or illegal immigrants—are doing the victimization.  Confirmed examples and statistics that do not fit the Western elite’s media’s narrative of victimization by a radicalized white cis male population include Muslim-on-Jewish violence in Europe and the U.S. (e.g., the recent Boulder, Colorado attacks) [8]; Muslim-on-LGBT violence [9]; Muslim-on-female violence [10]; illegal immigrant-on- female violence and human trafficking [11]; and black-on-Asian violence [12].  Since these facts don’t fit the requisite narrative, they are mostly ignored or downplayed by the media [13].

Nonviolent rifts are also apparent among the “victimized” identity groups.  For example, women’ in general oppose the entrance of transgendered females into women’s sports [14], and radical feminists are so irate at transgenders as to actually have disrupted gay pride events [15].   Despite their common history of discrimination, Hispanic Americans and African-Africans have been increasingly at odds [16], with the former being more conservative and gaining an edge economically.   Hispanics mostly ignored the Black Lives Matters protests in 2020, while many African-American leaders have opposed rampant illegal immigration, which has put downward pressure on jobs in the already low-wage service sector [17].  It is very telling that only a narrow majority of Latinos believe black-Hispanic relations are mostly or very good [18].  And black-Jewish relations?  Just ask black rapper Kanye West (Ye), who despite his anti-Jewish ranting remains a multi-billionaire and very popular [19].   Moreover, the friction between identity groups may not always be of an interethnic nature, as witnessed by the increasing American Latino support for ending illegal immigration, building a border wall, and deporting currently residing illegal immigrants [20], most of whom are also Hispanic.

With the increasing friction among identity groups, major changes are underway, both societally and politically.   One prime indication of the former is gun ownership. Once a stereotypical pursuit of white males, gun purchases are surging among women, especially minority women [21].   More importantly, some “identity” groups—once so vigorously courted and even somewhat patronized by the Democratic Party—are now rapidly abandoning the Democratic party as well as mainstream diversity parties in Europe.  Women are flocking to and assuming leadership roles in the so-called “far-right” parties of Europe [22], which are in reality just centrist parties opposed to mass immigration.  And in the United States, not only did Donald Trump—the arch-“racist” and -“misogynist”—win the Hispanic vote in large states like Texas and Florida in 2024 [23], but he also won 25% of the African-American male vote overall [24].

All of this could in the end spell doom for the globalist elites and their control over the sovereignties of the West.   The elites are pulling out all stops, both legal and nonlegal, to keep the surging populist-nationalist parties from taking control in Europe, but the dam continues to crack.   And in the United States, despite his mercurial and even erratic statements and policies, along with his anti-DEI agenda, Trump continues to hold his own in opinion polls while the Democrats’ popularity wallows at an all-time low in the upper 20’s—barely enough to be considered a major national party anymore [25].  The Democrats seem to be in no hurry to win back the “deplorables” given their well-publicized but politically disastrous excursions into El Salvador to attempt to rescue an MS-13 recruit accused of wife-beating and human trafficking and sentenced to two previous deportation orders [26].

Whether they know it or not, by continuing to promote the victimization of a panoply of hyphenated Americans and non-citizens over an “America First” agenda, the Democrats are actually digging the very grave they may lie in soon.
