There is a vast literature on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who died on a November 22nd Friday like this in 1963. I have contributed my small share to such writing in an effort to tell the truth, honor him, and emphasize its profound importance in understanding the history of the last fifty-six years, but more importantly, what is happening in the U.S.A. today. In other words, to understand it in its most gut-wrenching reality: that the American national security state will obliterate any president that dares to buck its imperial war-making machine. It is a lesson not lost on all presidents since Kennedy.
Unless one is a government disinformation agent or is unaware of the enormous documentary evidence, one knows that it was the CIA that carried out JFK’s murder. Confirmation of this fact keeps arriving in easily accessible forms for anyone interested in the truth. A case in point is James DiEugenio’s recent posting at his website, KennedysandKing, of James Wilcott’s affidavit and interrogation by the House Select Committee on Assassinations, declassified by the Assassinations Record Review Board in 1998. In that document, Wilcott, who worked in the finance department for the CIA and was not questioned by the Warren Commission, discusses how he unwittingly paid Lee Harvey Oswald, the government’s alleged assassin, through a cryptonym and how it was widely known and celebrated at his CIA station in Tokyo that the CIA killed Kennedy and Oswald worked for the Agency, although he did not shoot JFK. I highly recommend reading the document.
I do not here want to go into any further analysis or debate about the case. I think the evidence is overwhelming that the President was murdered by the national security state. Why he was murdered, and the implications for today, are what concern me. And how and why we remember and forget public events whose consequences become unbearable to contemplate, and the fatal repercussions of that refusal. In what I consider the best book ever written on the subject, JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters (2009), James W. Douglass explains this in detail, including the James Wilcott story.
Realizing what I am about to say might be presumptuous and of no interest to anyone but myself, I will nevertheless try to describe my emotional reactions to learning of John Kennedy’s murder so long ago and how that reverberated down through my life. I hope my experiences might help explain why so many people today can’t face the consequences of the tragic history that began that day and have continued to the present, among which are not just the other assassinations of the 1960s but the lies about the attacks of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent endless and murderous “war on terror” with its mind-numbing propaganda and the recent anti-Russia phobia and the blatant celebration of the so-called “deep-state’s” open efforts to overthrow another president, albeit a very different one.
On November 22, 1963 I was a college sophomore. I was going down three steps into the college dining hall for lunch. (Many of my most significant memories and decisions have taken place on steps, either going up or going down; memory is odd in that way, wouldn’t you say?) I remember freezing on the second step as a voice announced through a PA system that the president had been shot in Dallas, Texas. When I finally recovered and went down into the building, another announcement came through saying the president had died. The air seemed to be sucked out of the building as I and the other students with a few professors sat in stunned silence. Soon little groups on this Catholic campus joined together to pray for John Kennedy. I felt as if I were floating in unreality.
Later that day when I left the campus and drove home, I thought back to three years previously and the night of the presidential election. Everyone at my house (parents, grandparents, and the five sisters still at home) had gone to bed, but I stayed up past 1 A.M., watching the television coverage of the vote count. My parents, despite their Irish-Catholicism, were Nixon supporters, but I was for JFK. I couldn’t comprehend why anyone would vote for Nixon, who seemed to me to personify evil. When I finally went up the stairs to bed, I was convinced Kennedy would win and felt very happy.

and I would ask myself the same question.
In the meantime, the next few years would bring the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile crisis, and the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, among other significant events, and for a high school student interested in politics and world events it was a heady and frightening few years. It was a country of newspapers back then, and I would read perhaps 3-4 each day and sensed a growing animosity toward Kennedy, especially as expressed in the more conservative NYC papers. I can remember very little talk of politics in my home and felt alone with my thoughts. As far as I can remember, this was also true at the Jesuit high school that I attended. And of course nothing prepared me for the president’s murder and the feeling of despair it engendered in me, a feeling so painful that I couldn’t really acknowledge it. At nineteen, I felt traumatized but couldn’t admit it or tell anyone. After all, I was a scholar and an athlete. Tough.
Then on Sunday morning my family had the TV on and we watched as Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald, the guy the government said had killed the president. The unreality was compounded manyfold, and when later it was reported that Oswald had died, I felt I was living in an episode of The Twilight Zone, a popular television show at the time, whose narrator would say we are now entering the weird world between shadow and substance.
The next day a friend and I went to the Fordham University campus to visit a Jesuit priest who was a mentor to us. He had the television on for JFK’s funeral and we sat and watched it for a while with him. After a few hours, it became too painful and the two of us went outside to a football field where we threw a football back and forth. Perhaps subconsciously we were thinking of Kennedy’s love of football; I don’t know. But I remember a feeling of desolation that surrounded us on that empty cold field with not another soul around. It seemed sacrilegious to be playing games at such a time, yet deep trauma contributes to strange behavior.
Then I went on with my college life, studying and playing basketball, until the day after Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21, 1965. Those New York newspapers that didn’t like Kennedy, hated Malcom even more and were constantly ripping into him. I vividly remember talking to my college basketball teammate the next day. His sense of devastation as a young African American struck me forcefully. As we walked to basketball practice and talked, his sense of isolation and gloom was palpable. Visceral. Unforgettable. It became mine, even though I didn’t at the time grasp its full significance.
In 1968 when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated, I was driving to visit a girlfriend and remember hearing the news on the car radio and feeling deeply shocked. I felt immediately oppressed by the first warm spring evening in the New York area. It was as if the beautiful weather, usually so uplifting after winter and so joyously stimulating to a young man’s sexuality, was conspiring with the news of King’s death to bring me down into a deep depression.
Soon the country would awaken on June 5 to the surreal news that Senator Robert Kennedy was shot in Los Angeles the night before. Like so many Americans, when he died not long after, I felt his death was the last straw. But it was far from it. For all the while Lyndon Johnson had lied his way to election in 1964 and escalated the Vietnam war to savage proportions. Death and destruction permeated the air we were breathing. The year 1968 ended with the suspicious death in Thailand of a hero of mine, the anti-war Trappist Monk Thomas Merton. Subsequent research has shown that that too was an assassination. And while all of this was going on and my political consciousness was becoming radicalized, I became a conscientious objector from the Marines. I was 24 years old.
By the late 1970s, having been fired from teaching positions for radical scholarship and anti-war activities, and mentally exhausted by the unspeakable events of the 1960s, I retreated into the country where I found solace in nature and a low-key life of contemplation, writing literary and philosophical essays, a novel, book reviews, and becoming a part-time newspaper columnist. By the 1990s, I gradually returned to teaching and a more active political engagement, primarily through teaching and writing.
Then in 1991 Oliver Stone jolted me back in time with his film JFK. I found powerful emotional memories welling up within me, and growing anger at what had happened to the U.S. in the previous decades. Soon JFK Jr., who was investigating his father’s assassination and was about to enter politics and take up his father’s mantle, was killed in a blatantly rigged “accident.” A month before I had been standing in line behind his wife in the bakery in my little town while he waited outside in a car. Now the third Kennedy was dead. I called my old friend the Jesuit priest from Fordham, but he was speechless. The bodies kept piling up or disappearing.
Then in 2009 I read and reviewed James Douglass’s masterpiece, JFK and the Unspeakable, and my traumatic memories of 1963 and after came flooding back in full force. I realized that those youthful experiences had been so difficult for me to assimilate and that I therefore had to intellectualize them, for the emotional toll of reexperiencing them and what they meant was profound. The book really opened me to this, but so too did the awareness of how sensitive I was to John Kennedy’s death, how emotional I felt when reading about it or hearing him speak or listening to a song such as “The Day John Kennedy Died” by Lou Reed. It was as though a damn had burst inside me and my heart had become an open house without doors or windows.
I tell you all this to try to convey the ways in which we “forget” the past in order to shield ourselves from powerful and disturbing memories that might force us to disrupt our lives. To change. Certain events, such as the more recent attacks of September 11, have become too disturbing for many to explore, to study, to contemplate, just as I found a way to marginalize my feelings about my own government’s murder of President Kennedy, a man who had given me hope as a youngster, and whose murder had nearly extinguished that hope.
Many people will pretend that they are exposing themselves to such traumatic memories and are investigating the events and sources of their disquietude. It is so often a pretense since they feel most comfortable in the land of make-believe. What is needed is not a dilettantish and superficial nod in the direction of having examined such matters, but a serious in-depth study of the facts and an examination of why doing so might make one uncomfortable. A look outward and a look inward. Just as people distort and repress exclusively personal memories to “save” themselves from harsh truths that would force them to examine their current personal lives, so too do they do the same with political and social ones.
What and why we remember and forget is profoundly important. Thoreau, in writing about life without principle, said, “It is so hard to forget what is worse than useless to remember.” This is so true. We are consumed with trivia, mostly by choice.
Perhaps a reason we remember so much trivia is to make sure we forget profound experiences that might shake us to our cores. The cold-blooded public execution of President John Kennedy did that to me on that melancholy Friday when I was 19, and by trying to forget it and not to speak of it, I hoped it would somehow go away, or at least fade to insignificance. But the past has a way of never dying, often to return when we least expect or want it.
So today, on this anniversary Friday, another November 22, I have chosen to try to speak of what it felt like once upon a time on the chance that it might encourage others to do the same with our shared hidden history. Only by speaking out is hope possible. Only by making the hidden manifest.
S. Eliot wrote in “Journey of the Magi” words that echo ironically in my mind on this anniversary of the day John Kennedy died:
All this was a long time ago, I remember
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we led all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth certainly,
We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and
Death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.
Remembering in all its emotional detail the day John Kennedy died has been a long and cold journey for me. It has allowed me to see and feel the terror of that day, the horror, but also the heroism of the man, the in-your-face warrior for peace whose death should birth in us the courage to carry on his legacy.
Killing a man who says “no” to the endless cycle of war is a risky business, says a priest in the novel Bread and Wine by Ignazio Silone. For “even a corpse can go on whispering ‘No! No! No! with a persistence and obstinacy that only certain corpses are capable of. And how can you silence a corpse.”
John Kennedy was such a man.
Eliot was right: Sometimes death and birth are hard to tell apart.
President Kennedy’s courage in facing a death he knew was coming from forces within his own government who opposed his efforts for peace, nuclear disarmament, and an end to the Cold War – “I know there is a God-and I see a storm coming. I believe that I am ready,” he had written on a slip of paper, and his favorite poem contained the refrain, “I have a rendezvous with death” – should encourage all of us to not turn our faces away from his witness for peace.
We must stop being at ease in a dispensation where we worship the gods of war and clutch the nuclear weapons that our crazed leaders say they will use on a “first-strike” basis. If they ever do, Eliot’s question – “were we led all that way for Birth or Death?” – will be answered.
But no one will hear it.
Would it be off topic to discuss another famous assassination a century ago? As a kid growing up in a small town Sierra Madre near Pasadena, California, I walked a few blocks to our local library and read some of the great books about Abraham Lincoln by Carl Sandburg. Like many others then I idolized him. Today over 50 years later of the 80 I have spent on Earth, I have changed my mind.
Where did Lincoln derive the authority to kill upwards of 1 million and plunder over half the country in order to “keep the Union together”? Take a look at the Constitution and see if you can find it. I can’t. Abraham Lincoln was “elected”, if you can call it that, by 39%. The first real test of American Government came with his election along with the first dismal failure. The Confederate States VOTED to leave the Union. Voting is a peaceful act. Lincoln could have said, “Go, you will be back in 20 years and we will welcome you back.” They had the same moral right to leave as the Founders did to leave England. There was not one word in the Constitution abridging their basic right to choose their own government. But Lincoln instead found a drunk and a psychopath to gang rape the South and kill upwards of 1 million while plundering their magnificent society they had built all based on lies. Slavery was totally legal at the time. New York was built by slave labor. The slave market there was about a block from the NY Stock Exchange. The South still suffers to this day where now the criminals seek to destroy the monuments of those brave souls who fought the totally illegal war brought to them by bully North led by unindicted war criminal Abraham Lincoln elected by 39%. This totally illegal war was also the first ratcheting up of federal power against all the intentions of the Founders to limit its power. If you read some of the many books about Lincoln, he changed during this period. He became a monster instead of the kind, intelligent lawyer he was known for. Today I believe Lincoln to be an unindiced war criminal like his henchmen Drunk Grant and Psychopath Sherman.
Are not we all slaves today to a totally out of control dictatorial government, working over half our lives to pay taxes to fund their many criminal secret unspeakable activities all over the planet? Slavery was not ended with the Civil War was it? Just another lie of many in high school history books which never get corrected.
Great commentary. Lincoln also suspended habeous corpus and other civil rights like the NDAA and Patriot Act has done all based on the lie of 9/11. As people travel this time of year they should keep in mind: The same government that told everyone it was safe to breathe the air tells us it is safe to go thru X-Ray machines at the airport. When a dentist gives a split second micro dose of X-Ray they cover our vitals with a led blanket. Millions of Americans a year go thru airport full body X-Ray machines and put their children thru them trusting the same government that lied to the people on 9/11. I think it is kind of disgusting that Rudy Guiliani, “America’s Mayor” for his performance regarding 9-11 in the city he was mayor of is now, in the ostensibly “conservative and Trump supporting” media being praised for his fine actions regarding Ukraine matters as the presidents personal lawyer. The “Left Wing media” CNN, MSNBC etc. are now trying to “convict” Guiliani in the press for his actions in Ukraine.

I recently got in a conversation with a cab driver who said he was there and a resident in NYC for the 9-11-01 event. I told him there were a lot of unanswered questions regarding that event and that I had read several books on the subject and had been searching for answers. I commented that the people of NYC seem to just accept the official narrative about the event. He replied, “that’s all you can do.”
I also commented that I did not like Rudy Guiliani’s performance regarding that event at the time. He replied that he thought Guilian’s performance as mayor was outstanding. He said Guiliani took control and command and strictly closed off all entries into Manhattan except emergency vehicles and showed real leadership.
When Rudy was running around the Towers like a chicken with its head cut off instead of being at 7 World Trade Center – Disaster Management Center because they knew it was to be destroyed, he said on camera he’s been advised that the Towers may collapse. We should not forget it was likely Bernard Kerik who whispered into Rudy Giuliani’s ear that the Towers were going to collapse when no one in the world expected that expect those on the inside of the conspiracy. Maybe Bernard Kerik should be asked to testify about his psychic ability on 9/11.
The ”unspeakable memory” is the fact that the JFK assassination has been a massive cover-up from day-one. After more than half a century, the government has never honestly investigated or named the actual down-on-the-ground players.
This has allowed the 3 letter agency in Langley, VA to take effective control of the USA. We even see their soiled hand in the name of Eric Ciaramella who was placed into the White House to fake-snitch on President Trump via his contact Adam Schiff.

Recently Robert Kennedy, Jr. gave a speech at a rally for vaccination-injured children in which he said he would tell his children not to think of the German people as Nazis; think instead, he told them, of Anne Frank. Would they, given the chance, have hid Anne Frank?
This is fine for children. But the real question is, would they have forged a diary upon which false Holocaust propaganda could be forced down the throats of future generations of children like themselves?
I joke, but RFK Jr. is a smart man, and we are not children anymore. I guess it’s no wonder why he would stop at Anne Frank, considering his family history. Tragedy in generations of the Kennedy family, and RFK Jr.’s own reserve I suppose, are testament to the ruthlessness of the implacable Zionists.
Consider the Umbrella Man at Dealey Plaza. Laurent Guyénot writes an essay today that concludes that Umbrella Man’s WWII political statement at the exact moment of the assassination positions him as a deliberate signal from the perpetrators, not just to the Kennedy family, but also to other Jews who remembered Joseph Kennedy’s opposition to a war with Germany.
I think it’s a mistake to stop, as so many prominent researchers do, at the simple implication of Thomas Merton’s “evil system” in the assassination. As Laurent Guyénot notes in his essay at Unz, “Dallas was an Israeli coup, ordered from Tel Aviv with Johnson’s support, and supervised by the local B’nai B’rith under the cover of the Dallas Citizens Council, who was sponsoring Kennedy’s visit, and of whom Abraham Zapruder himself was a member…”
It takes dissembling to ignore this and focus blame away from the real culprits. This is the truth that is Unspeakable.

What is the feasibility that Trump having studied the JFK assassination is actually taking the opposite path on the surface to not suffer the same fate?
Yeah…not very feasible, I guess…but just a thought.
I’m certain that the JFK assassination and all the other political murders too, have been heeded by ALL subsequent people of power, not just Presidents. So it would be entirely likely, in fact completely imprudent, if Trump did not realize that this could be his fate.
Trump could be crazy like a fox. Isn’t that what the Sylvain LaForest essay was about? It said that Trumps’ philo-semitism, like openly claiming the Golan Heights and now the West Bank for Israel, will ultimately delegitimize Israel by exposing its aims. Remember after Trump said that the US policy objective is Syria’s oil, Assad observed that Trump is the first honest president.
After the war, Joseph Kennedy wanted to play ball with the Jews, too, to get his son elected President. Look how that turned out.

Maybe in the higher echelons of power it’s a good idea to embrace your enemies, diplomacy and all that. Trump goes farther than others in this, but I don’t know how well that’s worked out for anyone. As I said, look at the Kennedy family. Even when speaking of such atrocities as the JFK assassination, people with any reputation at all (including our intellectuals!) are loath to utter the J word. They speak in generalities about the “national security apparatus” and “figures in the criminal underworld” like it was the Italians or something.
Down here on the ground I don’t think we can afford to be so politic. Sadly, it’s become incumbent upon those of us who have (almost) nothing to lose to speak up about Jewish influence.
Let’s do it for the Jews. After all, throughout history it’s Jews who have taken the brunt of Jewish power, only to then have their misfortune used toward some further agenda. It’s heartbreaking to consider real Jewish suffering as a dynamic of provocation and subsequent exploitation, especially when it enthralls Jews to an insular, paranoid view of their neighbors.
I don’t want to “get rid of all the Jews” as others have preposterously put it. I just want them to wake the hell up. It’s not like they’re stupid, and there are, it goes without saying, so many profoundly good things about them as a group, not to mention individually.
I always try to distinguish between Jews and Zionists…the same way i would make a distinction between an American and a Neocon or NOW, an American and a Democrat or a Progressive. Many do not…Jim Stone as an example. I see that as bigotry or racism…All one has to do is watch a few episodes of Know More News and the Zionist agenda becomes more than apparent. I am sure there are those in various countries who despise Americans and fail to make the distinction between the average American citizen (I despise that word because it labels us as part of the state) and whatever monsters and pure evil have taken hold of our ‘government’.
It’s not racist or bigoted to call attention to the complicity of ordinary Jews in Zionist schemes.
An automatic loyalty is pledged to the larger group by even the most casual of Jews – lots of non-Jews, too – making them easy targets for conspirators. Take Umbrella Man. Do you think he knew of the assassination beforehand? Did the Dallas Citizens Council know? How far up this giant conspiracy does one go to get to someone who knew that JFK would be murdered?
A lot of people played their part in the assassination without knowing much of anything, and did so through misplaced loyalty. The cover-up from that day to this is underwritten by this unquestioning loyalty, and backs many questionable events since. It always asks first, is it good for the Jews? Followed by insisting that it’s anti-semitic to point this out. It depends on people like you to police the parameters of this absurd double injunction.
Your spontaneous feeling of revulsion against perceived anti-semitism is a conditioned response that is the mirror image of this unquestioning loyalty. It’s been bred in you – in all of us.
None of the other groups you mention command this kind of automatic fealty.
The American idea is built on the merits of the particular individual, not one’s group. This is why most Americans are quick to absorb individuals and why groups, organized by whatever measure but often ethnic, find it so easy to take advantage of an American system that a lot of citizens still foolishly believe to be a meritocracy.

Never mind. My intention is to point out that conspiracies depend on blind loyalty. In the same way, Jewish domination depends upon the visceral response, by Jew and non-Jew alike, of outrage against so-called anti-semitism, which turns out to be any mention of Jews at all.

My distinction between Zionists and Jews has nothing to do with any spontaneous feeling of revulsion against perceived anti-Semitism as a conditioned response that is the mirror image of any unquestioning loyalty.
There may have been a time in my life that anti-Semitism was repulsive. And at that point in my life it was likely inbred. Quite a while back, I realized it as a technique and a conspiracy.
My distinction is the same I would use to understand the difference between any religious or race or ethnicity and their extreme counterparts.
It would be easier to grant you your distinction, if you didn’t consistently describe calling attention to in-group complicity as racism, bigotry, anti-semitism, etc etc etc

Our First Jewish President Lyndon Johnson? – an update!!
A few months ago, the Associated Press reported that newly released tapes from US president Lyndon Johnson’s White House office showed LBJ’s “personal and often emotional connection to Israel.” The news agency pointed out that during the Johnson presidency (1963-1969), “the United States became Israel’s chief diplomatic ally and primary arms supplier.”
But the news report does little to reveal the full historical extent of Johnson’s actions on behalf of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Most students of the Arab-Israeli conflict can identify Johnson as the president during the 1967 war. But few know about LBJ’s actions to rescue hundreds of endangered Jews during the Holocaust – actions that could have thrown him out of Congress and into jail. Indeed, the title of “Righteous Gentile” is certainly appropriate in the case of the Texan, whose centennial year is being commemorated this year. Appropriately enough, the annual Jerusalem Conference announced this week that it will honor Johnson.
Historians have revealed that Johnson, while serving as a young congressman in 1938 and 1939, arranged for visas to be supplied to Jews in Warsaw, and oversaw the apparently illegal immigration of hundreds of Jews through the port of Galveston, Texas….
A key resource for uncovering LBJ’s pro-Jewish activity is the unpublished 1989 doctoral thesis by University of Texas student Louis Gomolak, “Prologue: LBJ’s Foreign Affairs Background, 1908-1948.” Johnson’s activities were confirmed by other historians in interviews with his wife, family members and political associates.
Research into Johnson’s personal history indicates that he inherited his concern for the Jewish people from his family. His aunt Jessie Johnson Hatcher, a major influence on LBJ, was a member of the Zionist Organization of America. According to Gomolak, Aunt Jessie had nurtured LBJ’s commitment to befriending Jews for 50 years. As young boy, Lyndon watched his politically active grandfather “Big Sam” and father “Little Sam” seek clemency for Leo Frank, the Jewish victim of a blood libel in Atlanta. Frank was lynched by a mob in 1915, and the Ku Klux Klan in Texas threatened to kill the Johnsons. The Johnsons later told friends that Lyndon’s family hid in their cellar while his father and uncles stood guard with shotguns on their porch in case of KKK attacks. Johnson’s speech writer later stated, “Johnson often cited Leo Frank’s lynching as the source of his opposition to both anti-Semitism and isolationism.”
Already in 1934 – four years before Chamberlain’s Munich sellout to Hitler – Johnson was keenly alert to the dangers of Nazism and presented a book of essays, ‘Nazism: An Assault on Civilization’, to the 21-year-old woman he was courting, Claudia Taylor – later known as “Lady Bird” Johnson. It was an incredible engagement present.
FIVE DAYS after taking office in 1937, LBJ broke with the “Dixiecrats” and supported an immigration bill that would naturalize illegal aliens, mostly Jews from Lithuania and Poland. In 1938, Johnson was told of a young Austrian Jewish musician who was about to be deported from the United States. With an element of subterfuge, LBJ sent him to the US Consulate in Havana to obtain a residency permit. Erich Leinsdorf, the world famous musician and conductor, credited LBJ for saving his life.
That same year, LBJ warned Jewish friend, Jim Novy, that European Jews faced annihilation. “Get as many Jewish people as possible out of Germany and Poland,” were Johnson’s instructions. Somehow, Johnson provided him with a pile of signed immigration papers that were used to get 42 Jews out of Warsaw. But that wasn’t enough. According to historian James M. Smallwood, Congressman Johnson used legal and sometimes illegal methods to smuggle “hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port. Enough money could buy false passports and fake visas in Cuba, Mexico and other Latin American countries. Johnson smuggled boatloads and planeloads of Jews into Texas. He hid them in the Texas National Youth Administration. Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more.”
During World War II Johnson joined Novy at a small Austin gathering to sell $65,000 in war bonds. According to Gomolak, Novy and Johnson then raised a very “substantial sum for arms for Jewish underground fighters in Palestine.” One source cited by the historian reports that “Novy and Johnson had been secretly shipping heavy crates labeled ‘Texas Grapefruit’ – but containing arms – to Jewish underground ‘freedom fighters’ in Palestine.”
ON JUNE 4, 1945, Johnson visited Dachau. According to Smallwood, Lady Bird later recalled that when her husband returned home, “he was still shaken, stunned, terrorized, and bursting with an overpowering revulsion and incredulous horror at what he had seen.”
A decade later while serving in the Senate, Johnson blocked the Eisenhower administration’s attempts to apply sanctions against Israel following the 1956 Sinai Campaign. “The indefatigable Johnson had never ceased pressure on the administration,” wrote I.L. “Si” Kenen, the head of AIPAC at the time. As Senate majority leader, Johnson consistently blocked the anti-Israel initiatives of his fellow Democrat, William Fulbright, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Among Johnson’s closest advisers during this period were several strong pro-Israel advocates, including Benjamin Cohen (who 30 years earlier was the liaison between Supreme Court justice Louis Brandeis and Chaim Weizmann) and Abe Fortas, the legendary Washington “insider.”
Johnson’s concern for the Jewish people continued through his presidency. Soon after taking office in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Johnson told an Israeli diplomat, “You have lost a very great friend, but you have found a better one.” Just one month after succeeding Kennedy, LBJ attended the December 1963 dedication of the Agudas Achim Synagogue in Austin. Novy opened the ceremony by saying to Johnson, “We can’t thank him enough for all those Jews he got out of Germany during the days of Hitler.” Lady Bird would later describe the day, according to Gomolak: “Person after person plucked at my sleeve and said, ‘I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for him. He helped me get out.’” Lady Bird elaborated, “Jews had been woven into the warp and woof of all [Lyndon’s] years.”
The PRELUDE to the 1967 war was a terrifying period for Israel, with the US State Department led by the historically unfriendly Dean Rusk urging an evenhanded policy despite Arab threats and acts of aggression. Johnson held no such illusions. After the war he placed
the blame firmly on Egypt: “If a single act of folly was more responsible for this explosion than any other, it was the arbitrary and dangerous announced decision [by Egypt that the Strait of Tiran would be closed [to Israeli ships and Israeli-bound cargo].”
Kennedy was the first president to approve the sale of defensive US weapons to Israel, specifically Hawk anti-aircraft missiles. But Johnson approved tanks and fighter jets, all vital after the 1967 war when France imposed a freeze on sales to Israel. Yehuda Avner recently
described on these pages prime minister Levi Eshkol’s successful appeal for these weapons on a visit to the LBJ ranch. Israel won the 1967 war, and Johnson worked to make sure it also won the peace. “I sure as hell want to be careful and not run out on little Israel,” Johnson said in a March 1968 conversation with his ambassador to the United Nations, Arthur Goldberg, according to White House tapes recently released.
Soon after the 1967 war, Soviet premier Aleksei Kosygin asked Johnson at the Glassboro Summit why the US supported Israel when there were 80 million Arabs and only three million Israelis. “Because it is a right thing to do,” responded the straight-shooting Texan.
The crafting of UN Resolution 242 in November 1967 was done under Johnson’s scrutiny. The call for “secure and recognized boundaries” was critical. The American and British drafters of the resolution opposed Israel returning all the territories captured in the war. In September 1968, Johnson explained, “We are not the ones to say where other nations should draw lines between them that will assure each the greatest security. It is clear, however, that a return to the situation of 4 June 1967 will not bring peace. There must be secure and there must be recognized borders. Some such lines must be agreed to by the neighbors involved.” Goldberg later noted, “Resolution 242 in no way refers to Jerusalem, and this omission was deliberate.” This historic diplomacy was conducted under Johnson’s stewardship, as Goldberg related in oral history to the Johnson Library. “I must say for Johnson,” Goldberg stated. “He gave me great personal support.”
Robert David Johnson, a professor of history at Brooklyn College, recently wrote in The New York Sun, Johnson’s policies stemmed more from personal concerns – his friendship with leading Zionists, his belief that America had a moral obligation to bolster Israeli security and his conception of Israel as a frontier land much like his home state of Texas. His personal concerns led him to intervene when he felt that the State or Defense departments had insufficiently appreciated Israel’s diplomatic or military needs.”
President Johnson firmly pointed American policy in a pro-Israel direction. In a historical context, the American emergency airlift to Israel in 1973, the constant diplomatic support, the economic and military assistance and the strategic bonds between the two countries can all be credited to the seeds planted by LBJ.
ADDITONAL NOTE:
Lyndon Johnson’s maternal ancestors, the Huffmans, apparently migrated to Frederick, Maryland from Germany sometime in the mid-eighteenth century. Later they moved to Bourbon, Kentucky and eventually settled in Texas in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
According to Jewish law, if a person’s mother is Jewish, then that person is automatically Jewish, regardless of the father’s ethnicity or religion. The facts indicate that both of Lyndon Johnson’s great-grandparents, on the maternal side, were Jewish.
These were the grandparents of Lyndon’s mother, Rebecca Baines. Their names were John S. Huffman and Mary Elizabeth Perrin. John Huffman’s mother was Suzanne Ament, a common Jewish name. Perrin is also a common Jewish name.
Huffman and Perrin had a daughter, Ruth Ament Huffman, who married Joseph Baines and together they had a daughter, Rebekah Baines, Lyndon Johnson’s mother. The line of Jewish mothers can be traced back three generations in Lyndon Johnson’s family tree. There is little doubt that he was Jewish.

I was struck by the profound ring of honesty, truth and passion in his words. It wasn’t JFK who faked the Moon Landing. It was JFK who inspired a nation. When I listened I couldn’t help but compare it to Obama’s speeches which sound fake and dishonesty to the core. Like pretending a tinfoil Christmas tree is the real thing. Basically the same criminals who murdered JFK also attacked our nation on 9/11 and are trying to destroy Trump and Dr. Fetzer.
More than a half century after the fact, the USA has not honestly investigated or adjudicated the JFK assassination.

I was 10 years old when a note was passed to my 4th grade teacher which made her start to cry as she said “The president of the United States has been shot and killed”. I feel like a dark cloud descended over our nation that day and the sunshine of truth has been blocked ever since. Maybe not for everyone but in our household JFK was an inspiration and we listened to fantastic uplifting comedy albums that made fun of the Kennedy’s accent but was harmless and brought much joy to my family. As with the author, I was at Cornell in a physics class when Kennedy’s death was announced. I headed back to Manhattan via Greyhound. While at the Port authority bus terminal, I sat next to one of the many indigents that made that terminal home. For some reason I have never figured out to this day, he found it necessary to make sure I knew the CIA assassinated Kennedy. Strange to say the least.
Douglas’s book is amazing. The phone conversations JFK had with Khrushchev to fend off WW III would likely be a cause for an impeachment inquiry in todays world….back then, they saved our collective butts.
